A BRIEF COURSE IN GENERAL PHYSICS EXPERIMENTAL AND APPLIED offers a practical, study‑friendly introduction to physics. This edition emphasizes coordinating a reliable text, demonstrations, problems, and laboratory work to build real understanding.
The book presents core ideas in a clear, logical sequence, with emphasis on mechanical principles, energy, heat, electricity, light, and sound. It aims to connect fundamental laws to a broad range of natural phenomena, using approachable language and hands‑on experiments.
What you’ll experience
- A structured path through matter, motion, forces, energy, and the tools used to measure physical quantities.
- Guided lab work that reinforces concepts with straightforward experiments and practical questions.
- Clear explanations of topics like heat, expansion, fluids, gases, electricity, magnetism, and optics, with the math kept accessible.
Ideal for readers who want a solid, experiment‑driven foundation in physics and for courses seeking a concise, classroom‑friendly text.

In the Appendix will be found a few additional experi ments, for the convenience of those who wish to meet, technically, the published requirements for entrance to Harvard, the recommendations of the National Educa tional Association, or those of the College Entrance Ex amination Board for the Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools of the Middle States and Maryland, all of these recommendations being identical.
Numerical answers to problems will be found on pages 447 and 448. They are inserted to make easy the verifi cation of the student's accuracy in solving the numerical problems but as they are printed on one leaf they can be removed from the book without injury, if desired.

In this text experimental demonstrations are used to show the relation between the conditions imposed and the results obtained. These demonstrations lead to the statements of fundamental principles which are here given either as simple formulas or as expressions of these formulas in ordinary language. It has also come to be generally understood that there is no branch of natural science that has a more direct application to the needs of modern life than Physics. It is for this reason that emphasis is placed in this book upon the things that are essential in understanding the applications of the principles of Physics to that which is a part of our everyday experience. At -the end of each section there is a group of questions, which not only serve to recall the principles considered in the section and to stimulate the interest of the pupil, but also suggest directions in which these principles can be applied. Moreover, the problems that are given are practical problems based on conditions that are to be met with constantly. The general applications of Physics to the doing of things are graphically presented throughout by a series of full-page illustrations.
