Sinopsis

Foundations of the Old Testament helps you navigate ancient texts with clear, practical guidance.

Foundations of the Old Testament explains the main texts, manuscripts, and scholarly methods a student or teacher needs. It surveys how scholars study the Bible’s sources, explains the tools used to compare translations, and shows how to weigh different theories without losing sight of reverence for the sacred texts. The book covers the major divisions of the Old Testament and outlines the work of editors and commentators who shape our understanding today. It is written to be used as both an introduction and a reference, helping readers grasp where ideas come from and how scholars arrive at their conclusions. What you’ll experience

  • A clear map of the Old Testament’s structure, from the Pentateuch through the historical books.
  • explanations of manuscripts, versions, punctuation, and lexicons that readers encounter in study.
  • discussions of key critical approaches, with attention to how conclusions are formed.
  • references to major commentaries and scholarly debates to aid further study.
Ideal for readers who are new to biblical studies as well as instructors seeking a solid reference to support lessons and discussions. It provides a practical framework for understanding how biblical texts have been produced, preserved, and interpreted across time.

Those ancient Midrashim, notwithstanding many short-comings and mistakes, afford much information to the student of the Old Testament. The Bihliotheca Rahhinica has been published in parts from 1880-1885, and contains the Midiash on Genesis (pp. 558), on Exodus (pp.
