Sinopsis

Practical paths to lasting peace after the Great War

A clear, methodical look at how Europe can settle disputes fairly and prevent renewed conflict. This timely work argues that any durable peace must be earned through cooperation, justice, and careful handling of contested issues.

This edition surveys the postwar settlement with an eye on real-world outcomes. It covers the major challenges in Europe, from the Balkans to the balance of power, and considers how borders, treatment of defeated powers, and regional ambitions shape long-term stability. The author emphasizes restraint over vengeance and champions a disciplined approach to rebuilding trust among nations.
  • Understand the forces shaping postwar peace, including national interests and emerging regional alignments.
  • Learn how to evaluate reparations, borders, and governance to support lasting stability.
  • Explore suggested pathways for Balkan and Near East settlements and broader European cooperation.
  • See why alliance and American-British cooperation are highlighted as key to a sustainable future.
Ideal for readers seeking a historical perspective on postwar diplomacy, statecraft, and the making of a durable peace in Europe after the Great War.

In particular, until events have decided otherwise, I shall not renounce the opinion that the present republican movements in Germany represent merely a transitory phase of a political transformation wh'ose outcome will be a democratized Empire still resting in the main upon a monarchical basis. At the moment of writing half the Sovereigns of Germany are exiles, and the other half are wondering what the morrow will bring. Forth. No one need pity these short-sighted men, who, had they been gifted with but a modicum of political sagacity, might still to-day have been ruling over communities as con tented as any in Europe. United States, I have endeavoured to make due allowance for the situation created by the dramatic succession of events which began early in October. Nevertheless, I am not so impressed by the political changes which have occurred in Germany and A ustria-H ungary since that date as to believe that the future form of government has yet been definitely determined in the one case or the extinction of an ancient monarchy made certain in the other. For that reason the chapters relating to these countries have not been altered as drastically as the reader might expect. In particular, until events have decided otherwise, I shall not renounce the opinion that the present republican movements in Germany represent merely a transitory phase of a political transformation whose outcome will be a democratized Empire still resting in the main upon a monarchical basis. At the moment of writing half the Sovereigns of Germany are exiles, and the other half are wondering what the morrow will bring forth. No one need pity these short-sighted men, who, had they been gifted with but a modicum of political sagacity, might still to-day have been ruling over communities as contented as any in Europe. Nevertheless, it is probable that their fate in the end will be better than their deserts.
