Excerpt from Main Street and Wall Street
This book is not just a treatise on economics; nor is it a handy manual for investors. It purports to go deeper than that, down toward the root of things. It is partly the expression of a lifelong aspiration to promote a greater equality of opportunity among men - a more even chance at getting a living all round, and a fairer show at conserving the fruits of such activity thereafter. Only thus can there be any real pleasure in work and in thrift in the world. And it is upon the reasonable exer cise of these virtues that our American democratic polity must depend for its perpetuation. It should be a prime function of government to stimulate and in every way to protect the manifestation of these basic instincts. Property should never be allowed to degenerate into an instrument of oppression. Its only justification in a free state is that it shall contribute to such an equality of opportunity for all members of the community alike, that each one shall be more able to take care of and to make the best of himself.

This, then, is really a study in the relation of property to civilization. My theory of it could not be more pithily stated than in the following characterization of William Cobbett by G. K. Chesterton: He would have been as ready as any merchant or trader to face the fact that man, as God has made him, must make money.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of corporations and finance, exploring their evolution and impact on society. The author takes a critical yet insightful look at the rise of the corporation in the United States, tracing its history from the early days of the republic to the dawn of the 20th century. This historical exploration unveils a complex and often fraught relationship between the corporation and the individual, highlighting the tension between the pursuit of economic growth and the safeguarding of individual rights. The author examines how the corporation, originally conceived as a tool for large-scale ventures, has become the dominant form of business organization, encompassing even the smallest of enterprises. This shift is attributed to a unique American historical experience, marked by a specific blend of federal and state governance, and a growing need for efficient capital mobilization. The author also sheds light on the pervasive influence of corporations in shaping not only the economic landscape but also the very fabric of American society. Through a detailed examination of state-level corporate regulations and the fierce competition among states to attract businesses, the book reveals the complex interplay between political, economic, and social forces that shaped the modern corporation. The book's insights into the often-overlooked intricacies of corporate law and its far-reaching consequences make it a compelling read for anyone interested in the history of business and the role of the corporation in modern society.
