""Plane and Solid Analytic Geometry"" is a comprehensive textbook written by Frederick Harold Bailey and first published in 1897. The book offers a detailed introduction to the principles and methods of analytic geometry, which is the study of geometric figures using algebraic equations. The book is divided into two parts: plane analytic geometry and solid analytic geometry. In the first part, Bailey covers the basics of coordinate systems, equations of lines and circles, conic sections, and transformations of coordinates. In the second part, he delves into the study of three-dimensional figures, including planes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and toroids. Throughout the book, Bailey provides numerous examples and exercises to help readers understand the concepts and apply them to real-world problems. The text is written in a clear and concise style, making it accessible to both students and professionals in the fields of mathematics, engineering, and physics. Overall, ""Plane and Solid Analytic Geometry"" is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of analytic geometry and its applications. Despite being over a century old, the book remains relevant and useful today, and is widely regarded as a classic of the field. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Lib. QAT his book has been prepared primarily for the use of the students in theM assachusetts Institute ofT echnology, but it is hoped that it will be found adapted to the needs of other technical schools and colleges. While the authors have restricted themselves to subjectmatter properly belonging to a first course, they have, nevertheless, endeavored to give a complete and rigorous treatment of all questions discussed. The memorizing of a mass of formulas has been discouraged, the attention of the student being directed rather to the methods employed. At the end of the book a collection of formulas has been made, which, it is believed, is sufficient for all needs of the student. In the Plane Geometry considerable space has been devoted to the general forms of the equations. In particular, the equation of the circle is treated in its most general form. The conies have been approached from tlieir general definition, and the student is led to discuss the general equation of the second degree in which the xy term is missing, and to find the equations of the tangent, the normal, and the polar for the equation of this form. By this method of procedure much time is gained when the special equations of the parabola, the ellipse, and the hyperbola are discussed, and it is believed that the students grasp of the subject is thereby strengthened.
