This book is intended as a hand-book for teachers and as a help for students. I ts purpose is to aid in the comprehension and understanding, and therefore in the appreciation, of literature through the poems here presented. With two or three exceptions, these poems are taken from various standard School Readers, and most of them are recognized as being among the great short poems of English and American literature. Not all of them, however, are found in any one set of Readers; and it is hoped that the book may be found suitable for use as a supplementary Reader with any of the standard series. Literature classes in the common schools, high schools, and other secondary schools, are generally expected to give attention to many of these poems. Moreover, there is a large and increasing number of private students of literature all over the country whom the author has had in mind. He would like to be of some help to them.
