The Facets of Life is a distillation of ideas Hal Kelly learned as a teach and counselor. Observing people in difficulty has been an invaluable education to him. His best teachers were youngsters with learning problems, emancipated housewives, adults in marriage or career crises, and prisoners in correctional settings. Experience helped, too. After years of teaching from a traditional education background, Kelly went through intense training to become a counselor. Though he was a certified psychologist and did conventional therapeutic counseling, classrooms remained his preferred settings for helping people change. Interest in personal change phenomena led to his studying the effect of helping on both the helper and the person being helped. He completed his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh.
