Callie Jacken’s summer is off to a rough start. After her parents are killed in a car accident Callie is taken from the large city of Preston to Copper Creek. Copper Creek has no malls, no taxis or buses, and no buildings over two stories high. At home she was an only child, adored by both of her parents. She excelled in school and dreamed of going to college. At the Johnson home she will be one of eight foster kids. She will be sharing an attic room with three other girls and working on the farm from before the sun comes up until after it goes down. Callie turns seventeen the day after arriving at the Johnson home. She doesn’t know a thing about farms or animals but after a close call with Dillon, another resident at the Johnson home, Callie isn’t about to look for any help. She doesn’t need help. She can figure things out on her own. She can manage just fine. She doesn’t need pity, and she certainly doesn’t need any guy. She’ll just tough it out until she’s eighteen. It’s that simple. Or is it?
