"Out of Synch with Police Academies" represents the most complete collection of classic cop quotes ever assembled. Woven into an easy, quick, direct, read, this book reflects shared officer's views, experiences, and opinion's, spanning from coast to coast. Written by a police officer, these words of wisdom represent the collective experience of hundreds of conversations with fellow cops. This is as close to putting your ear to the street without putting on a uniform. Each quotation, phrase, definition or anecdote reflects the feelings and opinions of a broad cross-section, not of one author or of a particular police department. Certain phrases may be geographically or department specific, not necessarily universal in coverage. What is universal is the desire for training officers and seasoned veterans to pick up where police academies leave off. Police Academy is to training as doggie paddle is to swimming. If you follow the academy manual, you'll drown. Sure you learn the basics, but there is far more to making a career of it and staying alive than that which is written in our Cub Scout Guide. Training officers on the other hand, offer a rookie cop reality based training, the kind of training that gets you home at night, with a tinge of satisfaction from the distorted humor derived from the crap a cop sees every day. Crap like people in your face, arguing, crying, coughing, hacking and screaming sh-t like you killed their brother who you never even met. Of course, there is more to it than that. There's boredom, pressure, fear, politics, image, and respect issues that plague each day, as well. A Training Officer trains you on how to deal with these pressures, how to work the system, and how to survive the streets. What follows is a wealth of wisdom, humor, language, and insight; the way you hear it on the beat.

Kevin McGrath grew up in parts of metro NY where you were either in the mob or on the job. Asked if he always wanted to be a cop. Kevin replied "not always, only since the second grade." After receiving a Bachelor's degree with honors in Criminal Justice from the University of Nevada, Kevin entered the field of law enforcement first with the NYPD, then moved west and joined the LAPD. After a variety of assignments city wide, including training officer, Kevin is currently working on the streets of Los Angeles and believes that choosing the "right career" and understanding "how to negotiate the system" are two ways to avoid the plagues of burn out and job dissatisfaction. Kevin writes under a pen name.
