The French painter Claude Monet loved to paint outdoors to study the effects of light and color on his subjects. He painted a harbor scene at Le Havre, France, entitled Impression, Sunrise in 1872-73, and it was from this title that his painting style and that of his artist friends became known as Impressionism. In his works, Monet tried to show a certain moment of light before it changed, and he applied dots and dabs of colors to canvases in quick strokes.
