This book is in honour of the 75th birthday of Professor Eviatar Nevo, a leading world evolutionary biologist, and consists of contributions from friends and colleagues of Professor Nevo, who are all world-leading researchers conducting active research in diverse fields of evolution from cosmic to primarily biological evolution. The authors include evolutionary, molecular, and organismal biologists, systematists, paleontologists, ecologists, genetics, and also physicists and mathematicians who are all fascinated by the major thread that links all natural phenomena together (cosmically, biologically, and culturally), namely, the evolutionary process. This volume consists of four parts: (I.) Evolution of Life and Evolutionary Theory- including papers on the origin of life, stress and evolution, population genetic structure, convergent evolution in extremely halophilic prokaryotes, complex dynamics of multilocus genetic systems caused by cyclical selection, and evolutionary epistemology; (II.) Genome Evolution- including papers on adaptive genome regulation, comparative mammalian genomes and novel genes, selection as generator of genetic diversity, the biological role of pseudogenes, and genome signatures; (III.) Phylogeography and Phylogeny- including papers on phylogeographic hypotheses, mushroom phylogeny, macroevolution, and the origin of higher taxa; and (IV.) Human Evolution and Ecology- including papers on man's place in nature, telomere biology and aging, the origin of human hairlessness, and the effects of humans on Mediterranean landscapes. 'Skeletal metastases are both a common and devastating consequence of a spectrum of cancers. Significant advances have occurred in our understanding of the pathobiology of this process. This text provides a comprehensive review of current investigative findings and their clinical implications.' Steven T. Rosen, M.D. Series Editor

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Evolution is the most profound of human ideas integrating all natural phenomena: cosmic, biological, and cultural into a continuous universal change. This volume deals with evolutionary observations, experiments, and theories contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolutionary process, th honoring the 75 birthday of Eviatar (Eibi) Nevo. I first met Eibi in 1966 when he was a Fellow in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University and working mostly on cricket frog vocalization and speciation in the United States. His unique discovery of pipid fossil frogs in the Israeli Early Cretaceous, central Negev, is possibly the largest world collection of ancient fossil frogs. Our acquaintance developed into mutual friendship and admiration. Since then our long-lasting friendship has included a visit to Israel, enabling me to follow Eibi's major scientific achievements, in particular, his founding of the Institute of Evolution in the University of Haifa and now the pending establishment of the International Graduate School of Evolution. The research program of Eibi Nevo, in collaboration with numerous colleagues and students in Israel and across the world, encompasses diverse perspectives of evolutionary biology and biodiversity of genes, populations, species, and ecosystems integrating modem and classical evolutionary approaches, molecular and organismal. They deal with model organisms in all forms from bacteria through plants, fungi, animals, and humans conducted over local, regional, and global scales. 500 pp. Englisch.
