Excerpt from A Compilation of the Laws of the State of New York; Also, of the Ordinances, Resolutions, and Orders: Established by the Mayor, Aldermen and Commonalty of the City of New York, in Common Council Convened, Relating to the Fire Department of the City of New York, From 1812 to 1860

And be it further enacted, That the said representatives shall choose, on the second Monday of December in every year, by ballot, out of their own body, a president and vice-president; and out of the whole body of the firemen.
