Explore how the work-study-play, or platoon, plan reshapes elementary schools to blend study, social life, and hands-on activities. This approach ties classroom work to real-life skills while expanding how a school uses its space and resources.
The material explains how schools implement the plan, with examples from cities that adopted it and the measurable results they reported. It covers changes to curriculum, classroom organization, auditorium use, and the daily rhythm that mixes subjects, physical activity, and social learning. The goal is to keep students engaged, healthier, and better prepared for transitions to higher grades.
Ideal for readers interested in the history and practical shaping of modern schooling and school design.

Excerpt from First National Conference on the Work-Study-Play or Platoon Plan
One result of this conference was that the superintendents who attended it asked the United States Bureau of Education to serve as a clearing house of information in regard to the work - study-play plan. Consequently, during the past few months the Bureau of Edu cation has not only been assisting individual superintendents by pro yiding them with information which they desire in regard to this subject, but it has also been collecting from-all over the country all available data on the subject. Since cities are adopting the plan almost every month, the data received by the Bureau of Education are constantly being added to, so that what is printed one month will no longer be news by the end of the next month. A point has now been reached, however, where data of a sufficiently comprehensive character to release for publication have been secured.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the implementation of the 'work-study-play', or 'platoon' method of elementary education. Originating in 1918, this alternative pedagogy emerged as a response to overcrowded classrooms in factories of the Midwest. This is a replicated model that focuses on dividing students' days between practical, academic and play-based activities, employing multiple spaces for specialised instruction and activities, such as auditoriums, playgrounds, and workshops. The book evaluates the effectiveness of this method, concluding that it leads to improved academic performance while enriching the school experience with social and cultural activities. Additionally, the work-study-play method proves to enhance students' health and well-being through structured play and exercise. The book argues that this approach is particularly valuable in underprivileged urban areas, as it provides a more engaging and supportive learning environment.
