Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book concerns itself with pleuro -pneumonia and tuberculosis, two infectious cattle diseases. Both diseases have been present in the United Kingdom for nearly 50 years and are a constant threat to herds and dairy cattle, particularly in urban areas. Pleuro -pneumonia is a contagious disease affecting the lungs of cattle. It is characterised by the presence of white bands crossing and intersecting the darker structure of the lungs, giving it a marbled appearance. The disease is nearly always fatal and is incurable. Tuberculosis is a disease that affects warm -blooded animals and is contagious. It is caused by a microbe that creates small inflammatory lumps or foci in the tissues, and is often referred to as consumption. Infected animals develop phthisis, wasting, and bowel and lung conditions. Both diseases are present in the United Kingdom due to the importation of infected cattle and are difficult to control because they can have a long incubation period and cattle may not immediately show symptoms. The author lays out the history of the diseases, how they are transmitted, and how they affect both the cattle and the economy. Importantly, the author has recommendations for the implementation of public abattoirs, more stringent inspection of urban dairies and cowsheds, and district inspectors to help stem the tide of these contagious, infectious diseases. This book is a vital resource for the field of veterinary medicine concerning the history, transmission, and control of pleuro -pneumonia and tuberculosis and will also be of great interest to students of the history of veterinary medicine and meat production.
