Mr. Emerson has somewhere maintained 'that a man should be, above and before all things else, a man - not a teacher or a thinker, but a man teach ing and a man thinking. The writer disavows all claim of being an author or a lecturer, and will be abundantly satisfied if the reader of these pages shall attribute them to a librarian writing and a libra rian speaking, and in this way using two very effect ual methods of enforcing the principles of his work.

Observe, however; this principle which we are discussing does not claim for this imaginative element in literature our exclusive attention. It is no such one-sided principle as that. It is true that where a man is impelled, by the exigencies of his trade or profession, to give his especial attention to that; and to the litera ture of technical knowledge, for him the injunc tion is appropriate, to cultivate more largely the element of imagination. But where one an in this way and goes to this extreme, there are one hundred who, by nature and temperament, are likely to devote undue attention to the literature of imagination; and it is a poor rule which does not work both ways. If I find that fiction is not only attractive to me, but absorbingly attractive.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the theoretical implications of comparatively studying various iterations and versions of the same narrative, particularly in the context of popular literature and folklore tales. The author argues that these narratives reveal and reflect many of the anxieties and preoccupations of their time, and that by analyzing them, we can identify deeper ideological, social, and political trends. The book delves into particular case studies like the tales of Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, ranging across many versions, from the original grim fairytales to the sanitized versions popularized by Disney. At the same time, the author also brings in analysis of films and other narrative forms. The book thus offers a comprehensive and engaging look at the power of narratives, and their capacity to both shape and reflect the concerns of different cultures and societies.
