This book examines the array of human problems that would arise should individuals have to resort to using fallout shelters, particularly in terms of social science research. The psychological effects of the fallout shelter environment are explored through the lens of past studies on submarine habitability and polar isolation, as well as the internment of civilians and prisoners during wartime. The author draws upon these past experiences to highlight potential issues such as the importance of two-way communication, ways to reduce anxiety within a shelter environment, the effects of sensory deprivation on individuals, and the need for organized activity and meaningful work to maintain morale. The book concludes by recognizing that the psychological and sociological effects of fallout shelter living have not been adequately researched and that more comprehensive studies are needed. This book is a valuable resource for researchers examining the implications of fallout shelters on individual behavior.

Excerpt from Symposium on Human Problems in the Utilization of Fallout Shelters: Held at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D. C., 11 and 12 February, 1960
Changes in culture occasioned by the introduction of innova tions have sometimes posed extremely complex and challenging problems for planners and administrators. The difficulty, as stu dents of society have known for many years, stems partly from the fact that material and non-material components of a culture are necessarily interrelated and their relationships are conditioned by a complex of basic values. More importantly, the student knows that a satisfactory integration of the new material component does not proceed automatically. Nor does the most lucid and authoritative presentation of all pertinent facts necessarily ensure a prompt or satisfactory adoption of a new element. Changes in basic material culture may require the most sophisticated planning considerations.
