Si l'église a toujours honoré les saints, elle n'a pas toujours employé les mômes méthodes pour déterminer à quelles personnes il fallait rendre les honneurs dus aux amis de Dieu, admis dans le séjour de la gloire après une vie sainte ou, mieux encore, après un héroïque martyre. Dans les premiers siècles. Il n'y avait pas de canonisation formellement prononcée, comme aujourd'hui, après des enquêtes aux allures judiciaires bien moins encore pou vait-il être question de réserver à l'évêque de Rome le droit exclusif d'autoriser le culte ren du aux saints. Chaque évêque était compétent pour son diocèse, et son rôle se bornait le plus sou venta laisser faire. En réalité, il n'y avait a cela.
