Sinopsis

San José scale-insect experiments in 1904 offer practical insights into orchard spraying. This nonfiction work surveys how different lime-and-sulphur mixtures performed against San Jose scale across Connecticut orchards, including winter effects on both trees and insects, and recounts early- and late-season spray strategies. The description covers materials, methods, and equipment used in spraying, plus real-world results from several towns and individual growers.

The pages frame what worked in spring and fall applications, compare boiled and unboiled formulas, and explain how weather, tree condition, and application technique influenced outcomes. Readers will also see notes on build-out needs for spray setups, pumps, hoses, and field procedures that affected efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Details on numerous spray formulas, how they were prepared, and where they performed best.

  • Observations on winter damage to trees and how it interacts with scale control.

  • Practical guidance on equipment like portable steam boilers, pumps, and hoses for orchard spraying.

  • Field results from multiple Connecticut locales, including Milford, New Haven, and Bridgeport.

Ideal for readers of agricultural extension reports and historical pest-management methods, this edition preserves firsthand experimental observations and practical lessons for early 20th-century orchard care.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from San José Scale-Insect Experiments in 1904

At the time of cutting twigs to examine the insects prior to spraying, the best looking infested twigs were selected, but the extent of this Winter injury could not then be determined. But in many cases the infested wood was injured or dead and most or all of the scale-insects were dead in consequence, before the spray was applied.

In June, when the twigs were cut for the second examination to Show the effect of the treatment, the trees were in leaf and it was easy to distinguish the living from the dead branches. Only living branches, of course, were examined at this time, and in some cases the number of living insects after the treat ment exceeded the number found on the injured branches at the first examination.
