Excerpt from The Schoolboy Abroad
In this study, Laurent learns, he is to take his breakfast and tea, for which latter meal his new school-fellows perform a complete change of toilet, some of them even going the length of putting on white neckties. Dinner and supper are served in public, on a long table covered with spotless linen, and decorated with flowers and silver-plate, where the youthful guests converse with all the ease and refinement of good society. Laurent, placed beside Mrs Newton at the evening meal, has blushingly to confess that French schoolboys are not allowed to talk at table, which causes the good lady very naturally to wonder how they acquire their national repute for polite behaviour. He has 'no less than three helps of cold meat; and Mrs Newton is sorry to see that he eats somewhat gluttonously, like one accustomed to make the best of a meagre allowance.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the significant differences between English and German school life in the mid 19th century. Drawing on the insights of an English writer who spent time in a German school, it contrasts the more regimented and studious German system with the more relaxed and playful English approach. The author examines the role of boarding schools versus home and family life, the prevalence of physical exercise, and the varying degrees of freedom and discipline in each culture's educational institutions. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural differences between these two neighboring nations and their impact on the education of their young people. Through its exploration of a variety of themes, this book sheds light on the complexities of international student life and the importance of understanding diverse educational perspectives.
