Excerpt from Report of the Committee Appointed by the General Assembly of South Carolina in 1740: On the St. Augustine Expedition Under General Oglethorpe
Had other writers followed this advice, not to put breath in these dry bones, publication of the following Report may not have been thought necessary. But in two volumes of recent date, J ones's Dead Towns of Georgia, 1878, and Wright's Memoirs of Gen. Oglethorpe, 1867, all the old aspersions on the Carolinians have been raked from the ashes of the past. It is therefore a debt of patriotism, and justice to our fellow-countrymen, that their memory be vindicated.

The main object of the publication of the Report is to vindicate the Carolina troops. While it fully does this, it also suggests the following as probable causes of failure of the expedition.
