Excerpt from The Pl/I Programming Language
Fortran's rigid rules for program formatting. The notion of block structure was taken from Algol 60, while pl/i structures were taken from the record descriptions of Cobol. However, a great many features were added to pl/i that have no counter part in its ancestor languages.
An example of a pl/i program is given in Figure l. A program is written as a sequence of external procedures, which are defined in such a way that they can be compiled separately and then linked together when the program is executed. Within an external procedure, there can be internal procedures.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of PL/I, a powerful programming language designed in the 1960s to bridge the gap between business, scientific, and systems programming. Drawing inspiration from languages like Fortran, Cobol, and Algol 60, PL/I offers a unique blend of features and flexibility. The author meticulously dissects the language's components, from data types and declarations to expressions, storage options, and control flow mechanisms. This comprehensive exploration covers both fundamental concepts and advanced features, including arrays, structures, pointers, and file handling. Through detailed explanations and illustrative examples, the book illuminates the intricacies of PL/I's syntax and semantics. It also sheds light on the language's design philosophy, emphasizing its adaptability to diverse programming needs. Ultimately, this book provides a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand the power and versatility of PL/I. Its insights remain relevant for programmers and computer scientists interested in the evolution and application of programming languages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
