Two Sticks were at liberty, I ihould mofi certainly have feen him: I am afraid, there fore, that he languifhes under the cruel pow er of the Magician, who may at this mo ment be loading him with added tortures, for that temporary efcape to which I am fo infinitely indebted. It mull not be, con tinned Cleofas; I 'will go myfelf to the enchanter, and if my entreaties will not foften him, my gold, perhaps, may bribe him but, if both thefe means ihould fail, the \power and influence I now poifefs, may give f uch force to my menaces as to frighten him into compliance. I am now become related to more than one of thofe who are in the direction of the holyohice, and their power, if neceffary, {hall be called forth to affii't me. It is againfi the intereil of the Inquifition that fuch a devil ihould be in confihement. Indeed, fo intent was he upon the execution of this bufinefs, that the charming and fond Seraphina was, for a 'fhort time, forgotten, in his anxious impa tience to complete it.
