Hook line: A clear, practical look at why Canada should control its own copyright law. This edition explains the legal history and the public reasons behind Canadian rights.
The book presents a plain-spoken argument for Canadian self-government in copyright. It traces British laws and imperial actions, then shows how Canada built its own regime to suit local needs and cheap, accessible literature. Readers will see how policy goals, industry interests, and constitutional questions intersect in this long-running debate.

Yet it is believed that the conces sion to Canada of the right to exclusive jurisdiction throughout the Dominion as regards Copyright, would not only be an act of simple justice, but to Canada a measure of sound policy, one calculated largelytoincrease the supplyof cheap and popu larliterature; and to assist and to encourage a most impor tant branch of Canadian ih dustry - the printing and publishing trade - without doing any injusticeto the British author. The accompanying chapters are intended to present in a concise form the argument in favour of the right demanded, and in the hope that, by their pei'usal.
