Excerpt from Annette, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale
Having freed himself as quickly as he could from these turbulent democrats, who thronged every street and lane he passed, Alphonse at length reached his home in safety but, as might have been expected, he was re fused admittance; for his landlord, a steady, loyal citizen who did not trouble his head about politics, his only ambition being to live in peace and plenty, concluded from his dress that he was a sans-culotte. When, however, the young man made himself known, and explained the reason of his disguise, he was greeted with unfeigned kindness, and recommended to keep within doors for awhile, as, in the present irritated state of men's minds, it was most likely that for some days to come a rigorous search would be made after all aristocrats.

After escaping the palace during an attack, he becomes separated from his companion and must now navigate the dangerous streets of Paris in disguise to return home and fight for the royalist cause. The book pits duty against ambition, with the author using the Revolution as a backdrop to explore themes of love, loyalty, and honor. Along the way, Alphonse meets a variety of characters from different walks of life, each of whom challenges his perspective.
