Tancred is called to meet his uncle and take his place as heir presumptive. However, on his journey, he is intercepted by a group of Tzigans and bound to a tree. Edwige, the sister of their chief, rescues him, only for him to flee after finding out who she is. Tancred disguises himself as a footman to be near his uncle, but the revengeful Edwige also arrives disguised as a bride, and so begins a series of mistaken identities, misadventures and romantic entanglements. The author explores themes of love, deception, mistaken identity, the role of women in society, and the nature of nobility, all set against the colourful backdrop of 19th-century Hungary. The result is a delightful and insightful story that offers a unique perspective on the social and cultural norms of its time.
