Excerpt from The English Game of Cricket: Comprising a Digest of Its Origin, Character, History, and Progress, Together With an Expostion of Its Laws and Language
In the compilation hereof one great object has been kept steadily in view - viz., that of proving cricket to be purely of English origin; and in so doing a chapter dealing chiefly in negations became almost a matter of necessity, seeing that in the remote past no positive, or even relative, evidence can be adduced. The pro cess thus adopted is capable of determining once for 'all that cricket is the invention of the Briton, notwithstanding the learned, as well as the unlearned, attempts to prove the contrary. Obscure, very obscure, are the traces of its origin; and the frag ments of information relative to its early growth perplex quite as much as they enlighten. From a few scraps gathered now from this quarter and then from that, a rough idea may be formed how the promoters and patrons of a game - as yet without shape - nourished and brought up the bantling till it attracted notice.
