Acroteria, a term applied to the little pedestals placed on the pediment or fastigium one on the apex, and one on each lower extremity, serving to support statues. Accord ing to Vitruvius, those at the extremes ought to be half the height of the tympanum, and that in the middle an eighth part more. Acroteria likewise signify figures placed as orna ments or crownings on the mm of temples, or other build ings; they also denote the sharp pinnacles, or spiry battle ments, which stand in ranges about flat buildings with rails and balusters, and which are sometimes called acroteral ornaments.
