Excerpt from The Michigan Engineer: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society for 1902

I shall not attempt, gentlemen, on this occasion, to give a résumé of the past year's progress in Engineering in the State or nation; the field is a grand one, and would require the genius of the poet, artist, painter, inventor, and statesman. I must refer the ambitious and aspiring young man who would forge to the front, to the Engineering periodicals of the day, that cover our tables, and fill library shelves, and content myself with calling attention to a few of our future needs, to promote the advance ment of the younger members, and the student just entering the field.

Some man who thought himself wise said: Don't arrest progress by praising the I don't believe in that saying, because I have found that a little praise now and then, is relished by the best of men, and even boys, who perform good acts and deeds, are often inspired to repeat them, until they become the guiding habits of life, by a little judicious praise timely bestowed. Sickness prevented my presence with you one year ago, but you made a record, and I have read it.
