Excerpt from Theory and Rudimental Harmony

The degree from one to two is a step; from two to three, a step; from three to four, a half step; from four to five, a step; from five to six, a step; from six to seven, a step; from seven to eight, a half step. It will be seen that there arejlve whole steps (tones) and two half steps (semitones) in the completion of this scale. The half steps occur between e and f, b and c, all the others being whole steps. This is called the major diatonic scale of all other major scales must be constructed afler the plan of this scale, and for this reason is often called the model scale, because the others are modelled after it, but only in respect to the intervals are the scales alike.
