Sinopsis

Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 5: April, 1901

He governed his home and his farm with prudence and economy, and when by reason of advancing age he resigned from public life, he went back to the simple country life he had left long ago-but it was not the same. She who had made it home in the truest sense of the word had preceded him to the house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens, and his true heart mourned her sadly, while it bowed in humble submission to the will of God.

He then became the Agent of the American Bible Society, and removed to Tennessee. A few years later he returned to his native State, and settled in Wins ton. He never forgot the children's cause, and during his last years he was deeply interested and largely instrumental in establishing the Winston Graded Schools. In 1876, when the State government went into the hands of our own people, Dr. Wiley was entreated to allow his name to go before the Convention for nomination as a candidate for the State Superintendency. He did not think his duty led him back into the old paths and he declined in a letter in which he took the ground that the office should not be a political gift to any man. He lamented the fact that it was too late to express regret that the cause of popular education should have become encumbered with the political issues of the day.
