Sinopsis

Hook line: A traveling writer, an exile by profession, shares sharp, intimate observations from a German spa town and Swiss shores.

The notes read like a quiet, wry diary of a man who lives between continents. The narrator moves through hotel lobbies, post offices, and flower-filled gardens, recording small joys and careful judgments about people, places, and manners. The voice is reflective and grounded in daily detail, with clear, concrete scenes of meals, rooms, and routines that reveal a larger sense of belonging and displacement.

- A memory-rich tour of Zwieback and its mix of locals, travelers, and expatriates.
- Candid reflections on American and European social life, courtesy, and disguise.
- Vivid travel scenes from lake settings, gardens, and train departures, with intimate small details.
- Observations on language, literature, and the way culture shapes mood and identity.

Ideal for readers who enjoy intimate travel writing, personal essays, and memoirs about life in exile and the search for home in unfamiliar places.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Notes of a Professional Exile

The town is full of English and Americans, although there are, of course, a great many Germans. I am here to seethe Americans. Being an exile by profession, a few weeks with my compatriots who are here is almost like a visit home. Some of them are old friends whom I meet after a separation of years; others, again, I shall meet for the first time; and there are still others whom I may not have a chance of meet ing at all, but whom I may at any rate look at from a distance. There are but few men among them. They are almost all of the other sex, and I am de lighted to see how much they look like women.
