Excerpt from The Library of George Gordon King, Vol. 2 of 2: The Prints
The plan of this catalogue was formed for the pur pose of study, and not to extol the worth or to hide the deficiencies of the collection. Difficulties, however, were met in making the division by schools and by centuries. Some engravers, it happens, are claimed by two or more schools; and wrong or insufficient information makes doubtful any decision as to others. The division into centuries is, of course, arbitrary but it was thought bet ter to determine the centuries by the death-dates rather than by the birth-dates.
The prints forming the collection are placed loosely in portfolios, which are lettered from A to I or lightly mounted in volumes, which are numbered from r to 68. Of the contents of these portfolios and volumes, a gen eral statement is given in Part I., the Book Catalogue, under the heading Prints. The portfolios are divided into schools and centuries, the volumes are paged, and the prints are continuously numbered from 1 to 5538.

Sizes are given in millimeters, the height invariably being placed first. Unless otherwise expressed, the size includes only the design, and not the plate-mark or the sheet upon which the impression is made. Even in millimeters, however, sizes of prints are only useful aids, and not test standards; as, because of a difference in the shrinkage 'of the paper, such close measurement sometimes shows a variation between two impressions from the same plate. When the design of the plate is round or irregular or does not admit of exact measure ment, the general but indefinite terms folio, quarto, oc tavo, duodecimo, are used to express the size of the sheet, and, sometimes, in a round, or in an oval, to qualify the design.
All names of the engravers and the etchers are given in their original forms. For the birth and the death-dates and for the states of the plates, the most recent standard works have been consulted; but only a partial list is given herewith, and this is limited to works to which references are made in the text of the catalogue.
