T not infrequently happens that a reader can remember nothing relating to a certain book beyond the mere fact that at some period of his life he has read it. And, indeed, though the knowledge that he had done so would in itself be of little value, sometimes even that one point can not be definitely recalled. But, further than this, it would often be of much interest - occasionally of real importance - to know when he had read it, what impressions it conveyed, what were its salient features, its associations, its relations to his life and thought at the time. Memory at best is apt to be treacherous and defective, and for the want of a proper record kept of the books he has read, the reader loses many of the pleasures of reminiscence and reflection.
