Variational methods for scattering: preserve reciprocity and bound error
Discover practical approaches to choosing approximations in scattering problems. This book shows how inserting a good field estimate into the variational expression can improve the scattered amplitude while keeping the reciprocity theorem intact. It explains that expanding the field in a basis and solving the resulting equations is equivalent to Galerkin’s method, and it guides you to pick function sets that yield real, reliable results. Excerpt from A Critique of the Variational Method in Scattering Problems
Another way of approximation is to choose for the field an expression which is physically plausible and/or mathematically simple and insert it immed iately in the variational expression. It will be shown that this is equivalent to choosing an approximation which satisfies the reciprocity theorem.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This illuminating book explores a highly effective analytical method for solving integral equations that arise in a wide range of scientific disciplines, particularly in the study of scattering problems. The 'variational method' is an alternative to traditional techniques and provides a more versatile approach. The author demonstrates how this method is equivalent to another well-established approach, known as 'Galerkin's method', and elucidates how a special set of basis functions must be used to achieve accurate and reliable results. The book emphasizes the importance of the 'reciprocity theorem', a fundamental principle that should be considered when selecting approximations, and provides insights into how to bound errors in the estimates. Through clear explanations and examples, the author offers a comprehensive guide to effectively applying the variational method to scattering problems, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners in physics, engineering, and other fields that involve the analysis of wave phenomena. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
