Excerpt from Practical Plane and Solid Geometry for Advanced Students
The training in Practical Geometry suitable for the student of Art consists of working problems mainly in Plane Geometry and Perspective. The former because decora tive designs are largely based on geometrical figures; and the latter because an artist constantly deals with appearances. On the other hand, the student of Science finds in Practical Geometry a powerful engine of calculation, which may often with great advantage be employed in preference to analytical processes. The principal use to him of plane geometry is that it enables him to make graphical or semi-graphical computations. Descriptive geometry is of great importance since it is required -in problems which involve three dimensions in space; and also because it shows how to exhibit the actual forms and dimensions of solid objects. This book is written for Science students. The necessity of accurate draughtsmanship is insisted on throughout. We describe how the drawing instruments may be set and their efficiency maintained. And the numerical answers appended to many of the examples should help to prevent any relapse into slovenly and'in accurate work on the part of those students who are apt to become lax.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book addresses the need for training in practical geometry relevant to science and industry. The author emphasizes that the traditional focus on pure geometry, with its Euclidean restrictions, is not suited to real-world applications. This book, therefore, teaches methods that can be used by science students and anyone else required to produce precise graphical constructions. It is laid out in a practical manner, with numerous examples for the reader to follow. The author includes the use of squared paper, protractors, and other tools. The key concept throughout the book is the necessity of limiting errors to within predefined tolerances. The author illustrates how graphical construction can be used to provide graphical or semi-graphical computations that often have advantages over analytical processes.
