Excerpt from Precise Implementation of Cad Primitives Using Rational Parametrizations of Standard Surfaces
If for the moment we ignore the computational cost factor on which Wesley lays a very justified stress, it becomes possible for an ideal geometric modeling system to deal with arbitrary bodies and surfaces. There do exist general algorithmic techniques for deciding all the questions about such bodies which a geometric modeling system needs to ask. These techniques derive from Tarski's general method for deciding quantified formulae in the elementary theory of reals, which has been improved substantially by various other authors in the years since Tarski's original paper: see and [8881] for a.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book discusses the problem of computing the intersection curve of two algebraic surfaces, each of which possesses rational parametrization. It focuses on the special case where the two surfaces are quadric. The author analyzes this case in detail, using a general decomposition theorem that guarantees the existence of a simultaneous canonical reduction of two quadratic forms in Euclidean n-space. In homogeneous 4-space this yields a classification and simple parametrization of all possible intersections between two quadric surfaces. Using these results, the author then treats the problem of analyzing the structure of solid bodies defined by Boolean combinations of half-spaces bounded by arbitrary quadric surfaces. The analysis leads to fast versions of some of the procedures required for geometric modeling systems. The author's insights pave the way for elegant algorithms that can be used in computer-aided design and solid modeling applications.
