The whole period was permeated with the idea, formulated by hundreds of writers in antiquity, that the Church, founded solely for the spiritual salvation of mankind, pursues an object totally different from that of the State; that her existence is sustained by means of a different character, and that she reckons on other and superior forces to enable her to accomplish her task within the minds and hearts Of believers.
