Excerpt from Introduction to the Pentateuch, Vol. 2: An Inquiry, Critical and Doctrinal, Into the Genuineness, Authority, and Design of the Mosaic Writings
That a correct judgment may be formed regarding the Hebrew Scriptures, as ancient literary productions, it is requisite to consider the circumstances of time and place which may have contributed in imparting to them their precise form and complexion, as well as to keep in view, with respect to their claims to a Divine origin, the ends, principal and subordinate, which it will appear any particular portion was designed to serve. In a work like the Pentateuch, of so great antiquity, and particularly of such varied contents, historical, doctrinal, and legislative, these considerations assume special import ance; and here, if anywhere,' attention must be given to the circumstances in which the work was produced, the principle by which it is pervaded, and likewise the scope and the rela tion of its several parts to the leading idea or ideas as dis cernible from a survey of the contents.

This book explores the Pentateuch, the foundational texts of the Hebrew Bible, as a divine revelation and a detailed record of the Israelite constitution and polity.
