Excerpt from The Elements of Deductive Logic: Designed Mainly for the Use of Junior Students in the Universities
IN subsequent Editions several minor alterations and additions have been introduced into the Text of some of the Chapters. A few Notes, as well as an Index and a Collection of Examples, have also been added. In making these alterations and additions, the Author has gladly availed himself of suggestions kindly offered, from time to time, by various correspondents and friends, amongst whom he ought specially to mention Professor Park, of Belfast. He has, however, endeavoured to pre vent the work from materially exceeding the limits of its original size.

Logic have been noticed in various parts of the book, but they have only been casually alluded to, not treated in distinct chapters. Logie has always been over-weighted with extraneous matter, and, wherever it is possible, it is desirable to relieve it of its superfluities, though much discretion may be needed in the process, and though the requirements of examinations have a constant tendency to lead writers on Logic to consider not how little, but how much they can introduce into their works.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces readers to the principles and concepts of formal logic, exploring a fundamental pillar of our ability to reason and think. Formal logic is an ancient practice with roots in the work of Aristotle, the author positions the subject within this historical context and examines ideas that have withstood centuries of analysis and debate to provide a foundation for human reasoning. The author acknowledges different schools of logical thought and explores the contours of how we communicate ideas, identify fallacies in reasoning, and draw meaningful conclusions. Central to formal logic are the formation and use of terms, propositions, and inferences, and the book thoroughly examines the nature and use of each while investigating deeper questions about the validity of thought itself. By explicating the relationship between language, thought, and reality this book provides insights into the human capacity for knowledge and discourse.
