Excerpt from Notes on the State of Virginia: With an Appendix
HE following Notes were writ ten in Virginia, in the year I 78 1 and form what corrected and enlarged in the Winter of 1782, in anfwer to Qieries propofed to the author, by a foreigner of dii'tinction, then refiding among us. The fubjeéls 'are all treated imperfectly; fome fcarcely touch ed on. To apolagize for this by develop ing the circumitances of the time and place of their compofition, would befto '0pen Wounds which have already bled enough. To thefe circumfiances fome of their imper feaions may with truth be afcribed; the great mais to the want of information, and want of talents in the writer. He had a few copies printed, which he gave among his friends and a tranflation of them has been lately publiihed in France, but with fuch alterations as the laws of' the prefs in that country rendered neceflary. They are now offered to the public in their oi'la ginal form and language.
