Sinopsis

Excerpt from Moltke's Military Correspondence, 1870-71: Published by the Prussian General Staff Department for Military History; First Section, the War to the Battle of Sedan

Black Forest can't be directly defended either by South German States or by Prussia (or Austria). South German Army must fall back either on Mainz (to Prussians) or on Ulm (to Austrians), if any. Retreat to Ulm leads to South Germany being theatre of war or to dealings with France. But retreat to Prussian Army at Mainz makes it impossible for French to advance in South Germany.

The author presents a collection of meticulously crafted military analyses and plans, focusing on the potential for a Franco-Prussian war. These documents, penned in the years leading up to the conflict, reveal the author's keen understanding of strategic advantage, logistical planning, and the critical role of alliances in shaping the course of international conflict. The book's primary focus is on the importance of pre-emptive action and the strategic value of assembling forces in specific locations, allowing for swift mobilization and offensive capabilities. The author's emphasis on the vital role of railroads in modern warfare, particularly in the rapid deployment of troops, provides a fascinating insight into the evolving nature of military tactics. These documents offer a revealing glimpse into the complex geopolitical landscape of the time and the author's conviction that Prussia, through careful planning and strategic positioning, could emerge victorious in a potential war with France.
