Excerpt from The Essentials of the French Language

This abridged French course was composed at the request and for the use of some Fren'ch students who wanted to learn, in a very limited space of time, all that is essential in the language and most commonly used in social and commercial relations.

According to their information, existing French methods were either too elementary or too complicated, too incomplete or too voluminous. They wanted something short, clear, practical, substantial, and devoid, as much as possible, of pedantic technicalities.

While in the state of manuscript, this little French course was studied by them and proved to be satisfactory. They found it easy to learn and interest ing, and, in a few months, were able to express themselves in French on many subjects of daily occurrence.

Encouraged by their success, I showed my manuscript to pupils who had studied French with me for years with the aid of the old methods. All of them took a liking to my little essay and wanted to study it.

Finally the conclusion was drawn that a book of this kind was needed in America, and I was advised to prepare it for print.
