Discover the Proverbs of Alfred as a window into early English wisdom and manuscript culture. This scholarly edition, edited by Edvard Borgström, compiles the famous Old English verse with an introduction, notes, and a glossary that illuminate its sources, language, and manuscript history. It presents the Proverbs of Alfred alongside related texts from key medieval manuscripts, offering careful comparison and contextual study.
The book grounds the text in its manuscript world. It discusses the Trinity College manuscript, the Jesus manuscript, and the Cotton manuscript (along with copies and later printings), showing how scribes handled spelling, abbreviations, and half-lines. A detailed introduction explains the creation, transmission, and editorial choices behind the edition, while notes explain linguistic features and textual variants. A glossary helps readers understand old words and forms in context.
Ideal for students and readers of medieval literature, philology, and manuscript studies who want a reliable, well-annotated edition of a classic Old English verse collection.

Excerpt from The Proverbs of Alfred: Re-Edited From the Manuscripts, With an Introduction, Notes, and Glossary
The Proverbs of Alfred have already been published four times, and a new edition may therefore seem super fluous. But at the time when I undertook this piece of work, there existed only three editions, and these were of such a nature as to render a new one desirable, particularly as regards the Trinity ms. Then recently recovered. In 1900 I submitted to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Lund, as part of the treatise for my Licentiate Exami nation, the text of the above-mentioned ms. The pressure of my teaching duties has since then prevented me from completing this piece of work until now and has also de layed the printing. When Professor Skeat's edition came to my notice last year, the work had advanced so far, that part of it was already in type. The critical examination of his edition has further retarded the publication of this dissertation.
I here beg to take the Opportunity of expressing my sincere gratitude to my former teacher, Professor Dr. Ernst A. Kock of the University of Lund, for valuable advice and for the encouragement he has given me during the progress of my studies.
