Excerpt from P. Vergili Maronis Opera, Vol. 2: Notes
Meliboeus, a dispossessed and exiled shepherd, encounters Tityrus fortunate in the undisturbed possession of his homestead. Tityrus is represented as a farm-slave who has just worked out his freedom; and this symbolises the confirmation of Virgil in his property, the slave's master representing Cc tavianus, and the two ideas of the slave's emancipation and Virgil's restora tion being so mixed up as to confuse the whole narrative which is at one time allegorical, at another historical.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed reading of Virgil's Eclogues. The author focuses on the poems' themes of patronage, the complexities of their historical and social settings, and how political anxieties manifest through them. The author reads the Eclogues through the lens of significant thinkers of antiquity and the Renaissance, revealing the universal nature of the experiences Virgil describes. The book also considers the Eclogues in their literary context. The author demonstrates how Virgil drew on and transformed poetic conventions, as well as the influence the different mythical and literary traditions had on his work. A striking feature of this book is the author's ability to illuminate the cross -currents of the poems, such as how the Eclogues' idyllic, pastoral exterior belies a landscape imbued with political realities and social anxieties. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
