September 1, 1916, the Library of Congress addressed the following circular letter to 232 historical societies, university and public libra ries, and other learned institutions in the United States: dear sir: The Library of Congress is desirous of having in its files information of the location of the important col lections of the papers of prominent Americans, civil, religious, and military. It would, therefore, apprec1ate a list of such collections of original manuscripts in your custody, giving the inclusive dates and descriptive title of the individuals whose papers are listed.
We do not ask for a list of all of your collections of personal papers, but merely for a list of those whose historical impor tance or size justify mention.
We inclose a list representing such selected collections of personal papers in the Library of Congress, for your informa tion and as an example of What is desired.
