Excerpt from Two Studies in Self-Directed Change
For several years, the authors have been working to develop and test a simple method for self-directed behavior change. In more than fifty indivi dual case studies we have found that most individuals report some degree of success in their efforts to change with this method. Schwitzgebel (1964) has analyzed a group of these case studies to determine factors important in producing change. Zachs (1965) used an adaptation of the method to test its effectiveness with college students who were trying to reduce cigarette smoking. The group of students who used the method showed a 53% decrease in the number of cigarettes smoked (compared to control students who showed a 17% decrease). A 51 day follow-up indicated only a slight regression in these figures.

This book delves into the fascinating realm of self-directed behavior change, exploring the methods and principles that empower individuals to achieve personal growth. Rooted in the humanistic psychology movement of the mid-20th century, the author emphasizes the inherent human capacity for self-actualization and the importance of personal agency in lasting change. Through detailed case studies and experiments conducted within T-groups, the book examines the effectiveness of a structured approach to self-change. Central to this approach is the concept of self-research, where individuals actively observe and record their own behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. The author underscores the significance of goal-setting and feedback in facilitating change, demonstrating how these elements enhance motivation and self-awareness. The book explores the dynamics of commitment, feedback, and group interaction, offering insights into how these factors influence the success of self-change efforts.
