Sinopsis

A concise, authoritative reference on British ranks, titles, and precedence
This practical volume presents a comprehensive guide to the systems of dignity, privilege, and order in the United Kingdom. It combines chronological and alphabetical lists to show how offices, peerages, and ceremonial roles are arranged and recognized today.

The book covers the Crown, the Peerage, and the official ranks, including bishops, knights, and civil servants. It explains how titles are created, inherited, or delegated, and how precedence is determined across royal and public life. Rich in detail, it is designed to help researchers, students, and genealogists understand a complex tradition with clarity.

- Clear tables and indexes that illuminate precedence, ranks, and patronage
- In-depth sections on the throne, the royal household, the peerage, and orders of knighthood
- Explanations of titles by courtesy, and the roles of officers and officials
- Practical notes that aid cross-referencing historical and contemporary positions

Ideal for readers of history, genealogy, or constitutional studies seeking a well-structured, reference‑ready volume.

Tables of Precedence. Characterized at once by dogmatism and incompleteness, they were not even free from the charge of inaccuracy; and though constructed on a most inconvenient plan for the reader, yet the accompanying facility of compilation did not induce fulness, accuracy, or authenticity. Although they furnished some clue to the rank pos sessed by each grade in the peerage, being a meagre series of general titles, they contained no information, by general rule or particular example, respecting the precedence of the individual members of such a class.

The division of the volume which presents the succession of great Officers of state will be found to possess some peculiarities devised to augment their accuracy and facilitate their use. Lapse of time had destroyed the completeness and dimi nished the utility of lists, which were at no time remarkable for fulness, correctness, or easy refer ence and in collecting a new series of such tables.
