On the other hand much time is wasted and the mental pow ers deadened because repetition is demanded in branches where reason should rule. This fault is illustrated in the teaching of History, Reading and Geography, especially in the Upper Form. Memoriter repetition of the text in history is of little value. The student should be held to a rational statement of the substance of the lesson and should be obliged to prove his understanding of it so far as possible.
