Honor and fame from no condition rise, Act well your part, for there the honor lies.
It is related of Apelles, a celebrated Grecian painter, that, calling on his friend Praxiteles, and not finding him at home, he left a mark upon the latter's canvas, by which Praxiteles might know his visitor. Now this mystic mark is supposed to have been two parallel lines, as true and perfectly drawn as though done by rule and compass. But this skill was the mystery; and the remark of Praxiteles was, that none but Apelles could give that sign I.
