Particularly been the Cafe in Britain, where he was notonly previoufiy ~tra'duced by the pen of Milton, bur it later occaftonal notices of him, and in the accounts given in the biographical colleétions, mofl commonly current among Englilli readers, often both meagre and partial, entire juflice hasmot been done him. This has render. Ed further inquiry, and fome more particular and fatiar factory account necefl'ary. At the death of Mr de Lolme, minifler of the French church, confilling of Proteflant Refugees, chiefly from Picardy, that had been fettled and fublilted at Edinburgh, till their congregational {late was difl'olved at his death, and the buildings that had been appropriated to their ufe, were pulled down for carrying on the building of the New Town, among other books that had belonged to his library, the poflhumous volumes of Morus' Sermons, which are very feldom to be met with, came into the pofteflion of the compiler of this account. He found in them an original turn of thinking, great livelinefs of fancy, and animation. Having employed fome leifure hours in rendering a few of them into Englifh, in which nothing of that author, fo far as he knows, had ever appeared, he was led to look a little more narrowly than he had done before, into the particulars of his life and. Charafler, to fatisfy at leaf} his own mind upon the fub jefi, fo far as any remaining fources of information, to which he had accefs, could enable him. And while he found in the refearch, a good deal to prompt curiofity, f0 alfo not a little, in fome liages of progrefs, to perplex and embarrafs the inquiry, and to render a decided Opi nion difficult upon matters about which the public mind and voice had been, for a time, f0 much divided, and may yet in fome degree continue divided.
